Good morning! Yesterday we read about James’ rebuke of greed. Today we continue our reading in James with a focus on patience. When I think of patience is quickly followed by two words that begin with the letter “P” – peace and prayer. Join me as we continue reading James chapter five.

Bible Verse – James 5:7-12 NLT

“⁷ Dear brothers and sisters,^[c] be patient as you wait for the Lord’s return. Consider the farmers who patiently wait for the rains in the fall and in the spring. They eagerly look for the valuable harvest to ripen. ⁸ You, too, must be patient. Take courage, for the coming of the Lord is near.

⁹ Don’t grumble about each other, brothers and sisters, or you will be judged. For look—the Judge is standing at the door!

¹⁰ For examples of patience in suffering, dear brothers and sisters, look at the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. ¹¹ We give great honor to those who endure under suffering. For instance, you know about Job, a man of great endurance. You can see how the Lord was kind to him at the end, for the Lord is full of tenderness and mercy.

¹² But most of all, my brothers and sisters, never take an oath, by heaven or earth or anything else. Just say a simple yes or no, so that you will not sin and be condemned.”

Reflection

James is reminding us to patiently wait for the Lord’s return. That while we wait for the Lord we are likely to see God’s kindness and mercy.

I like the example of waiting and being patient. Be patient comes from the word makros and thymos which refers to a long run or having a long fuse. As time goes on, let us continue the race ahead because we will see the Lord. Stand firm and patiently wait on the Lord’s return.

Prayer

Father God, thank you for another day. Thank you for blessing us with your patience, as we patiently wait for Your return. Lord, as we continue to grow as spiritually mature believers help us to not only be patient with your return, but also in every situation in our lives. Help us to trust your timing. Help us to see the bigger picture. Help us to align our will and understanding to what You are doing in this world. In Jesus name we pray, amen.
