Faith & Deeds

Good morning! Today, we will continue our reading in James chapter two with a focus on faith and deeds. Join me as we explore verses 14 through 17 and read on the expression of faith.

Bible Verse – James 2:14-17 NLT

14 What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but don’t show it by your actions? Can that kind of faith save anyone? 15 Suppose you see a brother or sister who has no food or clothing, 16 and you say, “Good-bye and have a good day; stay warm and eat well”—but then you don’t give that person any food or clothing. What good does that do?

17 So you see, faith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless.”

Reflection

In these verses, James asks the believer a rhetorical question “What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but don’t show it by your actions?”. The question points out that just having faith is not enough for a maturing believer. There should be action behind that faith. The believers that James wrote to had falsely claimed to have faith. It was all talk and no action. They boasted about their faith, but didn’t live out their faith. That’s why James asked, “Can that kind of faith save anyone? What good is it?

Sisters and brothers, I once read “workless faith is worthless faith; it’s unproductive and dead.” Faith in action is trusting God to do what He says He will do. His promises never return void. He is faithful to His promises.

Not only are we to trust God and live by faith, but we are also called to assist others. Let us continue to assist those who are poor and in need, the poor in spirit, the poor in health, and those who need encouragement in their faith. Let’s move from lip service to prayer, assisting as we can, and leading others by standing in faith in all our situations.

Stepping out in faith may look like, praying and asking God for wisdom and discernment before doing something major. It’s faith to act, it’s faith to trust in waiting seasons, and it’s faith to know when praying is enough – and you are faithfully waiting for God to respond. However, don’t be the one who says, I’ll pray for you and then doesn’t. Don’t be the one that prays and doesn’t believe their own prayer. Don’t be the one who sits still in fear, when God has clearly called you to move in faith.

Sisters and brothers, let’s put on that shield of faith this morning; and press forward as we extinguish every dart or arrow of fear and doubt that the enemy sends against us. Walk in God’s armor today.

Prayer

Father God, thank you for your love toward us. Thank you for continuous work in us as we continue to be stretched to grow in faith. Thank you for leading us in your Word so that we can continue to mature in our faith. Lord, forgive us for the times when we boasted in faith and did not follow it through with action. Lord, forgive us for the times we allowed fear to over rule our faith or allowed other people’s opinions to rule over what You have said. Lord, equip us to stand firm on Your promises and trust You.

Lord, by faith we believe You can heal every person on our prayer request list. We believe you will heal the three women and they will praise You for Your mighty work. While each one of those women have tough roads ahead, Lord we know and believe You are our/their Mighty Healer and healing is what you do and will do. Lord, we continue to pray for those who are battling cancer and we stand in that same faith for healing.

Lord, we stand in faith for You to cover each child as they go to and from school this year. Lord, we pray for good health, mental clarity, and peace as they learn and are around other children. Lord, put your hand on their teachers and parents. Help them to do well in their roles so that the children can be stable and ready to learn each day.

Lord, bless those seeking employment with jobs or new job opportunities that will bless them and their families. Lord, reduce stress and anxiety on jobs. Place the right mentors and colleagues in place to help them succeed at work.

Lord, by faith we pray all these things in Jesus name.
