Unchanged

Waves crashing against the San Diego La Jolla Bluffs

Good morning! This morning we will begin our reading in second Corinthians chapter ten. In this chapter Paul defends his authority to the church.

Bible Verse – 2 Corinthians 10:1-6 NLT

“Now I, Paul, appeal to you with the gentleness and kindness of Christ—though I realize you think I am timid in person and bold only when I write from far away. Well, I am begging you now so that when I come I won’t have to be bold with those who think we act from human motives.

We are human, but we don’t wage war as humans do. [a]We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments. We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ. And after you have become fully obedient, we will punish everyone who remains disobedient.”

Reflection

Apostle Paul not only appealed for obedience within the Corinthian church, he also stood firm against the disruption of the false apostles in Corinth who were trying to corrupt the church and/or mislead them. While those false apostles and questionable church members tried to limit Apostle Paul’s influence he remained focused and faithful. He did not reduce himself to their standards, but he used the proclaimed word of God and prayer. Using the word of God he was able to dismantle every stronghold, every argument, and every pretension of those who rose against him. Nothing nor anyone can stand against the word of God and succeed against it.

Sisters and brothers, Apostle Paul was so sure of God and his promises, he stood strong and noted, my paraphrase – Whether I write you or I stand in front of you, my words and my character remain unchanged. Paul was not moved by people he was moved by God and worked in the strength that God had provided him.

May we all walk in the truth and strength that God provides. Let our character be unchanging as we reflect Christ in this world at church, home, work, or wherever we may be.

Prayer

Father God, thank you for another day and new month to allow us to be your hands and feet in this world. Lord, thank you for how you have sustained us and gave us the strength to get through the previous six months of this year. Through the good and the bad, you have been faithful and good. Lord, amongst our tears, frustrations, worry, and anxiety – you were here with us. You reminded us that no weapon formed against us would prosper. You did not give us a spirit of fear or timid. You reminded us that you were working things out for the good of those who love you. Lord, you reminded us that we could take shelter in you. We are so grateful that you are comforter, peace giver and maker, our light in the darkness, and our salvation. Lord, you have been our healer and our strength. You have been our friend when there was no one else we could call on or wanted to call. Your unfailing love reminds us that we are worthy and we are loved by You. Lord, thank you.

Lord, we have no idea of what the next six months will bring but we ask for you to stand on your word – that you will never leave us or forsake us. Lord, hold us as we walk through this season. Guide us and give us your strength to accomplish the things you have called us to. Lord, we pray for each person who has been impacted by the earthquakes in Venezuela. Lord, our hearts break for those who have lost family members, homes, jobs, property and peace. Lord, help the equipment to arrive. Allow more lives to be found and saved. Lord, comfort them. Lord, heal the women and men in recovery and those around the world recovering from surgery. Lord, be with us today as we pursue your goodness in this world. Lord, show us where you desire for us to help. Lord, continue to transform our hearts, minds, and our relationship with you. In Jesus’ name we pray, amen.
