Good morning! Praise God, we made it to another week. Last week we covered a lot from Matthew 6. We read about rewards in heaven, forgiveness, glorifying God instead of ourselves, and our spiritual eyes. Jesus not only addressed the Pharisees and the people in that day, but His Words/teachings have definitely penetrated my heart. How about yours? Enjoy today’s devotion.
Bible Verse – Matthew 6:24 NLT
24 “No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money.”
Reflection
In today’s verses, Jesus continued from the prior verses, where he addressed the Pharisees on their attitude toward wealth, storing treasures on earth, and coveting money and wealth, which kept their spiritual eyes in darkness. They couldn’t see spiritually because they were so focused on earthly things, but they couldn’t see that either.
Now Jesus is taking it to the next level, excuse me as I paraphrase – [Hey! I’m telling you, you can’t keep doing what you are doing. You are either going to love money and serve it or you are going to love God and serve Him. You can’t do both. You are either going to trust me and lead the people to righteousness or you are going to serve yourself.]
God is calling us to trust Him more than money. He is calling us to trust Him instead of the things of this world. He is calling us to serve and follow His purpose for our lives instead of self-centered desires that draw us away from Him.
What do you need to trust God with today? ____
PRAYER
Father God, thank you for another day filled with your glory. Thank you for another day to serve you. Lord, you are so good to us. Lord, you meet us exactly where we are and pour out your love into our hearts. Lord, there is no one like you. Thank you for your forgiveness and patience with us. Lord, continue to open up our eyes and help us to see you. Lord, help us to fully understand your word and how you want us to apply your precepts in our daily lives. Lord, change us.
Lord, we lift up grieving families. Lord, you know exactly where they are and you know exactly what they need. Lord, you said you would send your comforter and Lord, we are asking you to comfort them. Lord, wherever there is heartbreak, Lord heal it. Lord, where there is division Lord restore relationships and make them whole. Lord, where there is anger remove the bitter root. Lord, we continue our prayers for those who are seeking employment and ask that you open up doors to a work environment that will allow them to grow and thrive. Lord, we pray for independent business owners and ask that you sustain their businesses in this uncertain time. Lord, you know each of our finances and you know those who are struggling to make ends meet. We ask that you provide for them. Lord, help those who are on the verge of losing their homes, jobs, and other sources of income. Lord, as they fix their eyes on you – show them your faithfulness and love toward them. Lord, help those who lost things in the California and South Carolina fires. Restore them and help them to rebuild. Lord, touch the women and men who are experiencing pain today and relieve them of their discomfort. Lord, touch the man who is going through dialysis and restore his kidney functions. Lord, heal the brother who had emergency surgery yesterday and help him to recover well. Touch his family and give them peace.
Lord, may your will be done in our lives. Lord, set free all of us who are in bondage to things that have taken your place in our heart. Lord, keep us. In Jesus name, amen.
