Sweet Perfume

Good morning! Have you ever smelled someone’s perfume or cologne before you saw them? Or heard someone say ‘that person bathed in that bottle of perfume or cologne’?Perfume is a little tricky because everyone has their own opinion on what smells good. Today in 2 Corinthians chapter 2, Paul will discuss a Christ like fragrance. Join me.

14 But thank God! He has made us his captives and continues to lead us along in Christ’s triumphal procession. Now he uses us to spread the knowledge of Christ everywhere, like a sweet perfume. 15 Our lives are a Christ-like fragrance rising up to God. But this fragrance is perceived differently by those who are being saved and by those who are perishing. 16 To those who are perishing, we are a dreadful smell of death and doom. But to those who are being saved, we are a life-giving perfume. And who is adequate for such a task as this?” – 2 Corinthians 2:14-16 NLT

While the verses we read yesterday, have Paul in the midst of concern for Titus, in these verses we see Paul regaining his focus. Paul, begins to remember that through Christ, God is the one who wins, defeating all of his enemies. Paul identifies himself as a former captive to the world once on the wrong side of the battlefield, but is now the one who proceeds in triumph because he has been taken captive by Christ – truly set free and stands on the side of victory. Although many rejected the gospel, Paul remained faithful to the call on his life.

Sisters and brothers, let us be a sweet aroma when we walk into a room. Let us fix our eyes on God as we walk around as a Christ like fragrance filling our own homes, churches, jobs and communities with the love and knowledge of Christ. Be an example of Christ, and let the familiar sweet scent linger wherever you go.

Father God, in the name of Jesus we come before you with thanks for all that you have done for us. Lord, you are always faithful and reliable. Lord, you know our hearts and our desire to be examples of Christ in this world. Lord, pour into us your Holy Spirit and may Your mighty power overflow through us leaving a sweet aroma wherever we are or go. Lord, let the words in our mouths and on our tongues speak with the truth of your word and not bits and pieces that mislead the flock. Lord, may our love for you be so sweet that others desire you with great passion. Lord, and when they find you, fill them up with your sweet aroma and peace. Lord, may our words and actions always be sincere. May our aroma always be a sweet Christ like fragrance rising to God. In Jesus name, amen.
