You Are Not Too Old

Good morning!  Yesterday, we read that Moses understood their was a call on his life by the time he was 40 years old. After Moses murdered an Egyptian and recognized someone knew the truth about what he had done, Moses fled to Midian.Join me today as we continue to read Stephen’s sermon as he responds to the high council.

Bible Verse: – Acts 7:30-34 NLT

30 “After forty years had passed, an angel appeared to Moses in the flames of a burning bush in the desert near Mount Sinai. 31 When he saw this, he was amazed at the sight.  As he went over to get a closer look, he heard the Lord say:  32 ‘I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.’[f] Moses trembled with fear and did not dare to look.

33 “Then the Lord said to him, ‘Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground. 34 I have indeed seen the oppression of my people in Egypt. I have heard their groaning and have come down to set them free. Now come, I will send you back to Egypt.’[g]“

Key points:

  • 40 years had passed since Moses had fled Egypt.
  • Moses is at least 80 years old at this point in his life.
  • God confirmed who he was – ‘I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
  • God saw the oppression and heard the groans of the Israelites.
  • God came down to set them free.
  • God told Moses to come – God was sending Moses back to Egypt.

Reflection

Moses spent 40 years away from Egypt, many things had changed but the cries and groans of the Israelites remained in God’s ears. God had not forgotten about his people.

The verse, “I have heard their groaning and have come down to set them free“, reminds me of times when I would call out to my mom for help. She knew the difference between a playful cry for help/attention from the let me get up and go check on this girl type of help. I love how God said I have come down, now come I will send you.

Jesus did that, He came down to save us and now he is sending us to share the gospel message of salvation and redemption with others. Remember what Jesus read in the synagogue in Luke 4:18-19:

18 The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

Like Moses many of us recognize that God has a purpose for our lives. We don’t always know what the greater plan is, but we know if we trust God he will lead us to it.

Sisters and brothers, don’t spend 40 more years waiting for God to call you again – aimlessly wondering in the wilderness, afraid to fulfill your call. I’m certain God has been calling you. When God says come, will you follow? Tell Him that you are ready to come.

Prayer

Father God we thank you for being our loving Father who sees and hears. Father thank you for coming to us even after we have fled from our call and purpose. Father thank you for sending your son Jesus Christ to save us. There is no greater salvation than what we find in you. Forgive us of our sins (known and unknown). Search our hearts and minds, and remove all the anger, bitterness and resentment we have inside. Lord God, you are the One who is in control of all things, heal our hearts and minds so that we can be whole and complete in you. Lord, wherever there is a part of us that doesn’t align with you, straighten it out and keep us in perfect peace with you and within ourselves. Lord, continue to send us and call us to the purpose and plan that you have for us. Help us to seek you first in all the decisions we need to make, in the actions we take and while we pursue our purpose. Lord, the enemy is trying to deceive us, plot against us and is making attempts to whisper into our ears. Lord, block the enemy’s attempts, plots and voice. Lord, speak loud to us and help us to hear your voice above the enemy and all the things that try to take our attention away from you. Lord, cover those who are grieving and are missing their loved ones, comfort them. Touch those who are in the hospital, those recovering from surgery, anyone in pain and are ill, heal them Lord. Be with those who are suffering from anxiety and depression, touch them, give them peace, release the cloud of gloom and lift the heaviness that they feel. Touch marriages and improve marriage relations. Be with the widows and orphans, and let them know that they are loved and provide for their needs. Be with the singles and help them in their time need and when they feel alone – let them feel your presence. In Jesus name, amen.
