Happy Wednesday! We are reading a summary within Stephen’s sermon to the council about Moses – the one called by God to set the captives (Israelites) free. Join me today as we continue our reading in Acts chapter seven. Have a wonderful day.

Bible Verse – Acts 7:23-29 NLT

“²³ “When Moses was forty years old, he decided to visit his own people, the Israelites. ²⁴ He saw one of them being mistreated by an Egyptian, so he went to his defense and avenged him by killing the Egyptian. ²⁵ Moses thought that his own people would realize that God was using him to rescue them, but they did not. ²⁶ The next day Moses came upon two Israelites who were fighting. He tried to reconcile them by saying, ‘Men, you are brothers; why do you want to hurt each other?’

²⁷ “But the man who was mistreating the other pushed Moses aside and said, ‘Who made you ruler and judge over us? ²⁸ Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?’ ²⁹ When Moses heard this, he fled to Midian, where he settled as a foreigner and had two sons.”

Key points:

• Moses was forty when he believed God called him to save the Israelites.

• Verse 25 –Moses thought that his own people would realize that God was using him to rescue them, but they did not. 

• Moses took things into his own hands, “Moses went to his defense and avenged him by killing the Egyptian.“(v.24)

• Question from the Israelite, “Who made you ruler and judge over us?“(v.27)

• Moses fled to Midian.(v.29)

Reflection:

As we read yesterday, as an infant Moses was saved from death. He wastaught all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was powerful in both speech and action.Sometime in Moses’  life he realized he was raised as an Egyptian but he was an Israelite.  Moses felt the call on his life, but initially took things into his own hands instead of allowing God to lead him.

While an Israelite confronted Moses with the question “Who made you ruler and judge over us?“,  it became a similar question that Moses asked God in Exodus 3, and God’s responses to Moses are captured in Exodus 3:12 “I will be with you.” and 3:14 “This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.’“

Sisters and brothers we are not Abraham or Moses but we are who God says we are. God has called us beyond the comfort of our homes and lifestyles to inform the captives that through Christ Jesus that they are free indeed.

Our value or reputation is not based on someone else’s opinion of us, God is the One who sends, He is the One who calls, He is the One who changes hearts, and the One who is in control of all things. Don’t be discouraged by the naysayers, they don’t see or understand God’s plan as you do – but God has gifted you with abilities and talents no one else has and designed a task specifically for you that no one else can do or they were too afraid to do and refused the call – don’t let that be you. Remember Moses was 40 when he realized the call on his life (v.25),  but he fled to the wilderness and after several years had past Moses officially answered the call.

When God calls you, will you be like Moses in Exodus 3:4 “When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, “Moses! Moses!”And Moses said, “Here I am.”

Question to ponder:

• Will you say, here I am or will you flee?

• If you have been fleeing the call, what is keeping you from answering it?

• Will you pray about the call on your life and ask God to fulfill His purpose?

Prayer:

Father God thank you for showing us another example of you working out all the details on our behalf.  Father thank you for showing us how the life of Moses was protected/spared for your greater purpose. Father God thank you for sending Jesus Christ as the ultimate One who set all the captives free. Father God thank you for hearing our cries, the cries of our ancestors prayers and so many others. Thank you for the gift of salvation and redemption. Lord continue to breathe life into us. Stretch us beyond our current state of mind and expand our thoughts to align with yours. Lord you have gifted and purposed us for greater things. We don’t want to miss our opportunities to use those gifts or fail to step into our purpose. Lord we want to be like Moses when you called him in the wilderness and he said,  “Here I am.”Lord, lead the way. Instruct us and be with us. In Jesus name, amen.
