Good morning! Communion Sunday’s are usually held in church once a month. I’ve experienced several types including a distribution of broken bread or crackers and a small cup of juice or wine (only once at a synagogue). Another type is bread and you dip it into a glass of grape juice. And now, there are the fancy disposable 2-in-1 package containers with the cracker/wafer and juice. While the method of eating and drinking in remembrance of Jesus may vary, the message does not change. Join me as we continue in Matthew 26.

BIBLE VERSE  – Matthew 26:26-30
“26 As they were eating, Jesus took some bread and blessed it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “Take this and eat it, for this is my body.”

27 And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them and said, “Each of you drink from it, 28 for this is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice to forgive the sins of many. 29 Mark my words—I will not drink wine again until the day I drink it new with you in my Father’s Kingdom.”

30 Then they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives.”

REFLECTION
Jesus used the bread and the drink as visual reminders of what was about to transpire. It was a reminder also of what he said in Matthew 20:28 “28 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”  The bread represented his body and the drink represented the blood that would be shed for the remission of sins. This act of remembrance invites us in and reminds us of the covenant promises of the Lord, Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross for our sins, and our ability to repent of our sins, be forgiven and reconciled to Christ.

Sisters and brothers, we did nothing to deserve the forgiveness of the Lord. However, He loves us unconditionally and with a selfish love. A love so great that He sacrificed His life for ours. When you prepare to partake in communion again, don’t go through the motions and say – this again. I ask that you think about where you were in life before you began to truly follow Jesus and where you are today. Think about the love that was so greatly poured out because of your/our sins. In remembrance of what Jesus did and with a heart of gratitude take and drink.

PRAYER
Father God, thank you for today. Thank you for your covenant promises. Lord, no one keeps a promise like you. Lord, thank you for making a way for our sins to be forgiven. Lord, our hearts cannot fully express our gratitude to you for forgiveness of our sins. Lord, we deserved eternal death, but you claimed us as your own. Forgive us of our haughty spirit, our forgetfulness of your grace and mercy, please come into our hearts and change us to be more like you. Lord, thank you for being the perfect sacrifice. Continue to lead us in Your way. In Jesus name, amen.
