The LORD Hears

Today my heart feels heavy for the people in Afghanistan, for the soldiers who loss their lives, and for the family members, friends and strangers of those impacted by the chaos and confusion. Since we concluded our reading in 2 Peter yesterday, I want to take a moment to reflect on a few verses written by the Psalmist – King David.

BIBLE VERSE – PSALM 34:17-20
17 The Lord hears his people when they call to him for help. He rescues them from all their troubles.
18 The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.

19 The righteous person faces many troubles, but the Lord comes to the rescue each time.
20 For the Lord protects the bones of the righteous; not one of them is broken!

21 Calamity will surely destroy the wicked, and those who hate the righteous will be punished.
22 But the Lord will redeem those who serve him. No one who takes refuge in him will be condemned.”

Sisters and brothers, King David went through a lot while he was the chosen and annointed King. His leadership was not without blemish, but the Lord knew his heart. The Lord still used him.

I chose these verses today because as a nation who cares for others, we are also people who mourn and sometimes become anxious around the chaos, conflict and lack of control abroad and within. Today, while I feel troubled – I know it is also a part of a prayer I spoke and wrote years ago that simply said, Lord – break my heart for what breaks yours. To align my heart with God’s heart is how I want to live and lead.

Today, in my lack of control but in remembering who is in control, I pour out my heart so that we can stand in prayer for our nation, for those in Afghanistan, those in Haiti, and those impacted by the various strands of COVID.

PRAYER
Father God, Almighty One, Prince of Peace and King of kings we come to you today in prayer on behalf of those in Afghanistan and those impacted by the tragedies in Afghanistan. Lord, we pray for peace in that region, in that country and in those around it. Lord, we pray for the elimination of chaos, unnecessary destruction and loss if lives. Lord, we pray for your Heavenly Armies of Angels to invade the enemy camps that are set on destroying lives. Lord, we ask for provision for those who are trying to exit. We ask for strength, discernment, wisdom and resources for those who are helping others to flee. Lord, cover the innocent, protect those who are in need of protection, disrupt attacks and bring peace into those areas. Lord, give rest to the weary and exhausted.

Lord we pray for those who are in Haiti and for those who have loved ones there. Lord, we pray for full recovery. Lord, we pray for those who are mourning and grieving the loss of life and home. Lord, we pray for the island to be stocked with necessary resources and providers to help the people re-establish life. Lord, we pray that no one becomes victims of predators seeking to take advantage of the situation or children or women or young men. Lord, protect them and help them to see you at work. Help them to know you and follow you.

Lord, we pray for the COVID situation that is plaguing the world. Lord, help us all to love our neighbor and to care for others. Help us to do the right thing to help get the virus under control. Lord, you know the hearts of people. Lord, change hearts of those who do not care for others well-being. Lord, work in us to be aligned with what you desire. Lord, humble us so that we will act on the things you place on our hearts. Lord, you are in control of all things – humble the proud and arrogant, cover and give strength to all the medical providers, and Lord bring forth a cure.

Lord, we pray for our leaders in our cities, states, counties, countries, and nations around the world. Humble them Lord and turn their hearts toward you and what concerns you.

Lord, help us to humble our hearts. Help us to be a living example of Christ at work in us. Lead us. Change us. Lord, hear us, rescue us, heal the brokenhearted, and redeem those who serve you. In Jesus name we pray, amen.
