The Next Step

Good morning! Have you ever been on your way to do something and you had to stop and change your plans? Well I’m certain many of us had plans for 2020, but many of those were changed. This morning we will continue our reading in Acts chapter nine, where Saul is on the road to Damascus. For more information about Saul read yesterday’s devotion. Enjoy today’s devotion and your day.

Bible verse:

As he (Saul) was approaching Damascus on this mission, a light from heaven suddenly shone down around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul! Saul! Why are you persecuting me?”

“Who are you, lord?” Saul asked.

And the voice replied, “I am Jesus, the one you are persecuting! Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.”” – Acts 9:3-6 NLT

Key points:

  • Saul was on his way to kill or imprison believers of the Way, men and women.
  • A light from heaven was around him.
  • Jesus asked Saul, Why are you persecuting me?
  • Saul was instructed by Jesus to get up and go, and he would be told what to do.

Reflection:

Saul was in the dark, but Jesus put light on the situation.

Sisters and brothers, sometimes we make decisions in the dark and we really need Jesus to put light on situations we are facing or taking action on or against. Saul thought his way was greater than the Way, but Jesus stepped in.

Jesus not only stepped into the situation, but Saul was humbled to his knees, and by verse six (6) Saul was instructed to go by faith – meaning he didn’t know what he would be told to do when he got to the city. Jesus only gave Him the first set of instructions, which was where to go.

Things to Ponder

Sisters and brothers, Jesus is always shedding light on situations. According to the Free Dictionary shed light means:

shed (some) light on (something) To reveal information or details about something; to clarify or help people understand something.”

  • What are some of the areas in your life that you need Jesus to shed light on? ______
  • If Jesus shed light on your situation would you humbly submit to His direction and go or do what He instructs you to do? ________

Sisters and brothers, sometimes Jesus only gives us the first step and if we are obedient he gives us the next one and the one after. Let Jesus shed some light on you today.

Prayer:

Father God, we thank you for sending your son Jesus Christ to save us and change our lives. Lord, we have had periods in our lives where we have been wondering around in the darkness, but you came on the scene and became our light. Lord Jesus, thank you for being our light. Help us to shine like a city on a hill. Lord, help our light shine for others to be drawn in and attracted to you living on the inside of us. Lord Jesus, use us to share the Good News about You. Help us to lead our sisters and brothers out of the darkness into the light. Lord, equip us more each day, give us boldness, and your Holy Spirit so that lives can be changed and healed, so that we will learn to do right, seek justice and defend the oppressed (Isaiah 1:17) – In the name of Jesus. Amen!
