Good morning! Sometimes in life we will encounter situations and face circumstances that we simply won’t understand. Those events can shake us to our core and if we aren’t securely grounded in our faith we may be knocked off our foundation. Which leads me to the next beatitude.
BIBLE VERSE – Matthew 5:4 NLT
“Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.”
REFLECTION
This verse is one that I’ve struggled with in the past. Over the years, I struggled with the loss of numerous friends and relatives. Not because I lacked faith in God’s promises, but simply because the pain and ache in my heart was so heavy from the earthly loss.
As I held onto my faith and continue to hold-on, I truly understand that those who believe and receive Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior will be with the Lord and that I will see them again. While I do not doubt that at all, it is very difficult to experience loss when we look at it from a worldly perspective.
Maybe you have experienced a loss (e.g., marriage, friend, job, finances, death of a love one). Have you been mourning something or someone? _____________
Sisters and brothers, from a Biblical perspective, understand the Lord is faithful to comfort us and he is also faithful to send others to comfort us as well.
The Lord knows each one of us by name and he knows our pain. He is our comforter and he invites us to draw nearer to Him during good and bad times. He gives us strength from day-to-day, compassion for the sorrowful and a repentant heart to recognize the One who is in control over all things.
Let us not forget that as followers of Christ, the greatest death we can experience is dying to ourselves and living a life that pleases God. 2 Corinthians 7:10 reads: “10 Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.” Let us continue to look to the Lord who we will see one day face-to-face. Point others to the One who can save and comfort.
PRAYER
Father God, thank you for your love toward us. Lord, thank you for giving up your life so that we might have life and live it abundantly. Lord, thank you for holding us in your hand when we mourn. Lord, forgive us when we fall short of pouring out our hearts to you in the midst of our pain. Lord, thank you for forgiving us when we decided to go our own way and not follow you. Lord, we desperately need you to comfort us in our pain, but also to teach us as we go through the normal course of life in this world to lean on you. Lord, strengthen our foundation of faith and make us more aware of you. Lord, keep us planted in your word and faithful to your purpose for our lives. Lord, equip us to share the gospel with others so that on the day of your return or when you call us home we will rejoice because we will be with you. Lord, comfort the family who lost the matriarch of their family. Comfort the parents whose children passed away. Comfort the widows and orphans. Comfort the children whose parent passed away. Lord, comfort those who lost things or almost everything in the fires. Lord, comfort the families who lost their loved ones in the airplane/helicopter crash. Lord, bring forth truth and understanding.
Lord, be with us and continue to change us. In Jesus name, amen.
