Good morning! As we reach mid-week, it doesn’t surprise me that we start our Wednesday with Matthew 5 verses 1-12, the Beatitudes. While I can simply list the Beatitudes, as I will today, for the rest of this week I want to spend time pondering on a few of the verses. So, enjoy today’s devotion and I hope you join me tomorrow as I dig deeper into the verses. Have a safe and enjoyable day.
Bible Verse – Matthew 5:1-12 NLT
“1 One day as he saw the crowds gathering, Jesus went up on the mountainside and sat down. His disciples gathered around him, 2 and he began to teach them.
The Beatitudes
3 “God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him,[a] for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.
4 God blesses those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
5 God blesses those who are humble, for they will inherit the whole earth.
6 God blesses those who hunger and thirst for justice,[b] for they will be satisfied.
7 God blesses those who are merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
8 God blesses those whose hearts are pure, for they will see God.
9 God blesses those who work for peace, for they will be called the children of God.
10 God blesses those who are persecuted for doing right, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.
11 “God blesses you when people mock you and persecute you and lie about you and say all sorts of evil things against you because you are my followers. 12 Be happy about it! Be very glad! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remember, the ancient prophets were persecuted in the same way.
Reflection
Notice in these verses, those who are blessed live a life that we may not desire (e.g., poor in spirit, meek, etc.) or that the world describes as less than. Yet, Jesus spoke to them. Not only did he speak to them, he sat down with them and taught them. In summary, his reminder was that they were blessed for many reasons.
Sisters and brothers, those blessings are more apparent when we connect to God through faith and when we put our trust in Him.
When I read today’s verses on the Beatitudes, I think beautiful attitude because as we walk through this life we will experience hardships and various trials, but we will be blessed because of our beautiful attitude that is displayed as a result of our relationship with God.
May the Lord be with you and bless you this day with opportunities to have and display a beautiful attitude.
Prayer
Lord, thank you for today. Thank you for waking us up and giving us another opportunity to serve you. Lord, thank you for blessing us. Lord, forgive us when we fail to appreciate all the things you have done for us. Lord, help us to see our blessings instead of focusing on the trial. Help us to see our ability to draw nearer to you in the midst of a trial. Help us to adjust our attitudes so that others will continue to see you at work in us despite of our trials. Lord, heal our brokenness and use it for your glory. Lord, you know the needs of every reader and we pray that you will cover them, give them peace, guide their heart, provide wisdom and discernment, and cover their financial needs. Be with those who are experiencing difficulties on the job or have deadlines to meet. Help them to reach their goals in a timely and efficient manner. Lord, we continue to pray for those who are seeking employment. Lord, give them strength, wisdom, and the ability to do well in interviews and give them favor with the hiring committee. Lord, bless the environment that the will work in and let there be opportunities for growth and development. Lord, be with our children and keep them safe. May our attitude reflect you in all of our encounters today. Lord, we love you and thank you. In Jesus name we pray, amen.
