Good morning! Today, we will continue to read on Satan’s final attempt to persuade Jesus not to save us but to focus on himself. Spoiler Alert – Jesus wins! May God be with you today. May you feel His presence wherever you go. Enjoy today’s devotion.
Bible Verse – Matthew 4:8-11 NLT
“8 Next the devil took him to the peak of a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 “I will give it all to you,” he said, “if you will kneel down and worship me.”
10 “Get out of here, Satan,” Jesus told him. “For the Scriptures say, ‘You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him.’[Deuteronomy 6:13]” 11 Then the devil went away, and angels came and took care of Jesus.”
Satan/Devil’s Failed Plot:
The devil tried to allure Jesus by offering him the kingdoms of this world.
The devil used a similar strategy that he used with Eve in the garden, “you will be like God” (Genesis 3:5), by saying, “you will have all the world’s kingdom” (Matthew 4:8-9).
Reflection
Jesus was not convinced, nor was he going to allow the devil/Satan to take up anymore of His time. Jesus quoted scripture and told Satan to “get out of here”.
What scripture(s) do you use to get Satan out of your head or heart? __________
When I struggle with the successes of this world, I often pray for the Lord to keep me focused on His plan for my life. The scripture that has kept me grounded throughout my career is Mark 8:36 “And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul?” To be honest I often refer to that scripture for numerous reasons…it’s perfect for me in any season.
Questions to Ponder
What are you struggling with today? ______
What is the devil/Satan trying to get you to hold onto or offer you if you followed his plan instead of God’s plan? _______
Ask the Lord to strengthen your faith and to give you power to break free from the temptation of (e.g., financial, sexual, pride, status, envy, etc.) ________.
How will you worship the Lord your God and serve only him? _______
Prayer
Father God, thank you for today. Thank you for waking us up and for giving us another opportunity to serve you. Lord, you know everything about us. You continue to show us your faithfulness. Lord, as we go throughout the day help us to recognize the devil’s schemes to separate and divide, to tear apart churches and communities, and destroy the family with lies and pain. Lord, all power and glory belongs to you. Work in us to bring glory to your name. Lord, teach us your word and let it be written on our hearts so that we will be able to stand against the darkness of this world. Lord, keep us aligned to your word and will for our lives. Lord, don’t let us be distracted by the temporary riches or status of this world. Change our hearts to prepare this generation and the next for your return.
Lord, we pray for those praying with eager anticipation for you to deliver them from their circumstances. Lord, while they wait – strengthen them in their faith, equip them mentally and emotionally for the task ahead, and remind them that you are with them. Lord, renew their hope and trust in you. Lord, be with the man who had a brain bleed and help him to fully recover from surgery without any complications. Lord, we pray for those who lost a love one this year and ask that you strengthen their hearts and comfort them. Lord, be with those who are silent struggling and need help, bring other godly Christians around them to encourage and offer true friendship to them. Lord, heal those struggling with medical conditions and respiratory viruses. Lord, continue to be with those recovering from the various California fires. Provide warm and safe travels to those impacted by the snow across the south. Lord, cover and protect the children in this world. Lord, protect them from harm, feed those who are hungry, and provide a safe and healthy environment for them all. Lord, continue to draw us nearer to you and lead us in all our decisions. Lord, Your will be done. In Jesus name, amen.
