Live In Peace

Good morning! For the next few days we will continue our reading in Hebrews chapter 12 where the author calls us to listen to God.

Bible Verses – Hebrews 12:14-17 NLT

“14 Work at living in peace with everyone, and work at living a holy life, for those who are not holy will not see the Lord. 15 Look after each other so that none of you fails to receive the grace of God. Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many. 16 Make sure that no one is immoral or godless like Esau, who traded his birthright as the firstborn son for a single meal. 17 You know that afterward, when he wanted his father’s blessing, he was rejected. It was too late for repentance, even though he begged with bitter tears.”

Reflection

The author continues to remind us of the importance of listening to God and the consequences of when we don’t. Throughout scripture we read about those who followed God and desired to live a holy life and those who chose to be disobedient or self-serving.

Again, we are challenged to look after one another and strengthen each other in the faith so no one misses the grace of God. We also must be mindful that our own character doesn’t hinder others from a desire to know and follow Christ. We don’t want to be a poor witness that affects other believers faith in God. Please note, this does not mean we become a doormat or be abused in anyway by others. God will give us discernment and wisdom when we witness and follow Him.

Finally, our inheritance through Christ Jesus is a blessing and a promise fulfilled. The author noted Esau’s temporary need and how he gave up everything/his inheritance for temporary gain and he deeply regretted it later.

In our lives we will be tempted and pressured by the world to love it and all it can offer, but no matter what you do – keep living for Christ and don’t give up your inheritance in heaven. Keep striving for holiness so that you will see the Lord.

Based on the verses you read today, what are you struggling with?

What do you need to give to God to help you live in peace with everyone?

Is there a root of bitterness that you need for the Lord to uproot from your heart?

Prayer

Father God, we thank you for waking us up this morning! We thank you for your word that directs our behavior and reminds us of our need to display a Christ-like attitude. Lord, forgive us for falling short of displaying Christ like behavior. Forgive us for leaning on our own understanding and emotions instead of leaning on you. Lord, help us to stand on your word. Lord, help us to hold our tongue when our words will not bring glory to you. However, help us to speak truth in love and be bold in your word and purpose for our lives. Lord, help us to see the plots of the enemy and give us wisdom in our hearts and minds to remain focused on you. Help us not to give in, but to stand in faith believing your promises are true and that you will see us through. Lord, be with us as we continue this work and/or school week. Lord, be with the families who have experienced loss and devastation. In Jesus name, Amen!

Amen!
