Temptation of Personal Gain

Happy Monday! Last week we discussed the first temptation that Satan used to tempt Jesus. Today we will read on the second temptation. May the Lord bless and keep you today and throughout the week. Enjoy today’s devotion.

Bible Verse – Matthew 4:5-7 NLT
Then the devil took him to the holy city, Jerusalem, to the highest point of the Temple, 6 and said, “If you are the Son of God, jump off! For the Scriptures say,

‘He will order his angels to protect you.
And they will hold you up with their hands
so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.’[Psalm 91:11-12]

Jesus responded, “The Scriptures also say, ‘You must not test the Lord your God.’[Deuteronomy 6:16]”

Reflection
As you can read, the devil was making another attempt to tempt Jesus. When he said, ‘He will order his angels to protect you’. This time he partially quoted scripture leaving out “to guard you in all your ways”. The devil continued to pursue him, stating “you won’t even hurt your foot” (v.6), just like he convinced Eve in the garden by stating “you surely will not die” (Genesis 3:4)

Note: Jesus did not need to prove anything to the devil. Jesus was in the perfect will of God. He knew his mission and God’s plan. He used the Word of God and stood firm.

Brothers and sisters the devil is a liar. He deceives and tries to bring glory to himself. God’s will is never to harm you. Remain in God’s will, under the shelter of the Most High, your refuge and fortress whom you (we) can trust. Follow his will for your life and if you are ever in doubt, pray to the Lord our God for discernment and wisdom. Pray for the Lord to guide you as you seek to follow His will.

Prayer
Father God, thank you for loving us. Lord, thank you for being so good to us. Lord, teach us and show us your will for our lives. Lord, direct our path and guide us as we seek you in every area of our lives. Lord, strengthen us to stand against the devil’s scheme. Remind us to armor up with your Word and to trust your truth. Lord, we lift up the sick, the hurting, the lost without hope, the grieving families, those who are living in fear, the depressed, the addict and all the other things people are struggling with and ask for you to do a mighty work in their (our) lives. Lord, we need you daily. We need you to open doors and to close doors that need to be shut. We ask that you live in our hearts and overflow into every inch of our body. Lord, hold us as only you can and deliver us from any bondage that is trying to keep us from pursuing you and your purpose for our lives. In Jesus name, amen.
