He Sided With The Crowd

Happy Monday! Last Friday we read Matthew chapter 27 verses 15-19. I posed a challenge to you for the day and weekend, how did you do? Today, we are continuing in the chapter, however a decision must be made. Join me as we continue reading. Have a wonderful day.

20 Meanwhile, the leading priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas to be released and for Jesus to be put to death. 21 So the governor asked again, “Which of these two do you want me to release to you?” The crowd shouted back, “Barabbas!”

22 Pilate responded, “Then what should I do with Jesus who is called the Messiah?” They shouted back, “Crucify him!”

23 “Why?” Pilate demanded. “What crime has he committed?” But the mob roared even louder, “Crucify him!”

24 Pilate saw that he wasn’t getting anywhere and that a riot was developing. So he sent for a bowl of water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this man’s blood. The responsibility is yours!” 25 And all the people yelled back, “We will take responsibility for his death—we and our children!” – Matthew 27:20-25 NLT

Pilate, the governor had the authority to overturn what was being requested. However, in fear that this situation would be reported back to Caesar (John 19:12), Pilate gave into the crowd. Pilate’s attempt to clear himself from the matter by declaring Jesus’ innocence and by washing his hands was useless.

Brothers and sisters, we know that this was part of the greater plan, however there was room for Pilate and the mob to make things right. Today, let us look at the things that we can make right and do what is right. Let us take responsibility for the things the Lord has entrusted to us and make an impact on the world for the glory of God.

Father God, thank you for today. Thank you for your forgiveness and restoration. Lord, we apologize for following along with the crowd instead of following after you. Lord, touch our ears to hear what you desire for us to hear, our hearts to love like you love and our minds to remain focused on your grace and promises. Lord, be with families who are struggling today. Lord, bless us with wisdom, discernment and peace in the decisions that we must make today or prepare to make in the future. Lord, we pray for those who are lost and are without hope. Lord, continue to open our mouths to share the good news with humility and boldness. Continue to change us. In Jesus name, amen.

Keep seeking! Keep trusting! Keep praying!
