Happy Friday! The Lord has seen us through another week.
“Dear friends, I am not writing a new commandment for you; rather it is an old one you have had from the very beginning. This old commandment—to love one another—is the same message you heard before. Yet it is also new. Jesus lived the truth of this commandment, and you also are living it. For the darkness is disappearing, and the true light is already shining.” 1 John 2:7-8 NLT
The commandment to love one another is a consistent challenge on my best day. Why, you might ask. Well, it’s because my idea of what other people should do or say doesn’t always transpire the way that I plan in my mind. Additionally, I am amazed by things that I hear, see and experience, which can also create a hardening of my heart.
However, the God I serve is faithful to point out:
- my own flaws,
- how my brokenness once made me unbearable to be around,
- how I have been forgiven,
- how God can take anyone and any situation to use for his glory.
Then, at that moment of clarity, I’m able to look beyond myself and see what God sees (from my limited view). That is that God loves me and all of his children.
Are you struggling with the command to love one another? _____
If so, I want to challenge you to do two things over the weekend. First, ask God to help you to soften your heart to love like he loves. Second, spend today, tomorrow and the next day (if not longer) praying for the person that is difficult to love, forgive, be around or talk too.
Will you accept the challenge? ________ If so, let me know so that I can stand in prayer with you for the next three days. Because, I believe “the darkness is disappearing, and the true light is already shining.”
Father God, in the name of Jesus Christ we believe you desire for us to live a life full of abundance and free from the bondage of our painful past or present. We know you desire what is best for us and because of that we trust you with our whole heart and our ability to love like you love. Lord, give us discernment and wisdom in the “how to love” one another. Lord, correct our attitudes toward others, correct our facial expressions and our selfishness. Lord, where we have built walls of self-protection, begin to chisel it away and lead us to stand on the foundation of your protection. Lord, you are the expert estimator, the best repair man, and certified restorer – please begin the work in our lives and don’t stop until the work is complete. In Jesus name, amen.
Keep seeking! Keep trusting! Keep praying!
