Good morning! Today we will begin our reading in Hebrews Chapter five.
Bible Verse – Hebrews 5:1-6 NLT
“1 Every high priest is a man chosen to represent other people in their dealings with God. He presents their gifts to God and offers sacrifices for their sins. 2 And he is able to deal gently with ignorant and wayward people because he himself is subject to the same weaknesses. 3 That is why he must offer sacrifices for his own sins as well as theirs.
4 And no one can become a high priest simply because he wants such an honor. He must be called by God for this work, just as Aaron was. 5 That is why Christ did not honor himself by assuming he could become High Priest. No, he was chosen by God, who said to him,
“You are my Son.
Today I have become your Father.”
6 And in another passage God said to him,
“You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.””
Reflection
From Hebrews chapter 1-4, there were two major points:
- God’s son – Jesus: His exalted position and destiny. His Kingship and rule.
- The salvation- inheritance for those who remain in Him by faith.
We read themes that warned us not to neglect or forget the salvation we received and which is attainable for everyone through Christ Jesus -God’s son.
Now, the author of Hebrews is reintroducing points in scripture as a reminder to us that Jesus is also the High Priest. He was called by God and is greater than any priest that was appointed throughout scripture. We no longer go to a priest offering sacrifices for prayer and forgiveness, but now we go directly to the High Priest – Jesus Christ who was the perfect sacrifice which covered all of our sins. Today, sisters and brothers repent and turn away from your sins and ask the High Priest – Jesus Christ for forgiveness.
Prayer
Father God, thank you for choosing us. Thank you for being patient with us as we try to figure out our place in this world and how to serve You. Lord, some days are more difficult than others, but you give us strength to carry on. Lord, thank you, it is only by your grace that we are still standing. Lord, we thank you for being the perfect high priest – without blemish or sin. Thank you for making away for us to go directly to you as the High Priest to receive your compassion, gentleness, forgiveness of sin, and unconditional love. Lord, we repent of all our sins (known and unknown), and ask for your forgiveness. Lord, we desire to cleave to you in faith and walk in your ways. Lord, help us to reignite our passion to follow you and live in alignment with your plan and purpose for our lives. We know tomorrow is not guaranteed, so we want to begin right now – today living our life for you.
Lord, we pray for each believer and ask that you continue to strengthen their faith and trust in you. We pray for those who are far from you to turn back to you in a new relationship. We pray for those who don’t know you or who have denied you to soften their hearts and give their lives to you.
Lord, continue to work through the Pastors, Preachers, Reverends, Ministers, etc., that you have called to share the truth of your word and the gospel message. Lord, while we are not perfect, we serve a perfect God who is – Lord, continue your work in us all – teaching us and refining us daily. In Jesus’ name, amen.
