His Rest Still Stands

Good morning! The Lord has made a way for us to rest. Let us continue reading about it in Hebrews chapter four.

Bible Verse – Hebrews 4:1-5 NLT

“1 God’s promise of entering his rest still stands, so we ought to tremble with fear that some of you might fail to experience it. 2 For this good news—that God has prepared this rest—has been announced to us just as it was to them. But it did them no good because they didn’t share the faith of those who listened to God. 3 For only we who believe can enter his rest. As for the others, God said,

“In my anger I took an oath: ‘They will never enter my place of rest,’”

even though this rest has been ready since he made the world. 4 We know it is ready because of the place in the Scriptures where it mentions the seventh day: “On the seventh day God rested from all his work.” 5 But in the other passage God said, “They will never enter my place of rest.””

Reflection

In these verses, we read that God rested on the seventh day – after creation of the world, so rest has been available since the beginning of time. We also know that the Israelites wondered around in the desert for forty years and never entered God’s place of rest – God was with them, delivered them from slavery, hunger and so much more, but they were still rebellious and hard heated. There acts kept them from entering into His rest, but there is still time for everyone who has breath to know Him, believe in Jesus Christ His Son, repent and ask for forgiveness of their sins, and accept Christ as Lord and Savior. We also know God created rest for us. Rest for our bodies to recover and heal,  rest from hard work, rest to reflect and pray, and eternal rest through Jesus Christ for those who believe. Let us not forget or turn away in disobedience from God. Let us seek Him and hold onto the promise of rest that He gives for all who believe. Let us rest in the peace in knowing we will be with Him at rest with our loved ones one day, but today let us continue to press forward in the work He has called us to – sharing the message of salvation to the world.

Prayer

Father God, thank you for the weekend. Thank you for keeping many people safe when Hurricane Helene made landfall, but Lord as you already know some people died, had property destroyed, are without power, etc. We pray for the families that are grieving and ask that you comfort them. Lord, as two more hurricanes form we pray again for safety, for power to be quickly restored to the homes without electrical power, and to minimize the loss of life.

Lord, we thank you for your promise of rest through Jesus Christ. We thank you for giving us a peace of mind about the rest that is available for all believers. Lord, we don’t know what today, tomorrow, or next week has in store for us, but what we do know is that at the end of this life, believers will be found in you – in your rest. Lord, continue to equip us with your word and remind us of your promises. Keep us attuned to your voice and your will for our lives. Direct our steps and keep us near to you. Lord, continue to be with my family as you prepare my niece to join you. Lord, strengthen us and those whose loved ones have died or they have been given a terminal diagnosis. Lord, even though we may not understand why, we trust you and know that you will bring us through this difficult time. Lord, thank you for the hope we have because of your promises. In Jesus name we pray, amen.
