Good morning! Have you ever looked at your life and said, there is so much more to do? Have you been discouraged because it seems like things are not working out? Well, today in Acts chapter 19 we will read about another situation where Paul could have given up, but he remained focused on what God called him to do. The outcome was greater than the temporary disruption. Enjoy today’s devotion and prayer.
Bible verse – Acts 19:8-12 (NLT)
“8 Then Paul went to the synagogue and preached boldly for the next three months, arguing persuasively about the Kingdom of God. 9 But some became stubborn, rejecting his message and publicly speaking against the Way. So Paul left the synagogue and took the believers with him. Then he held daily discussions at the lecture hall of Tyrannus. 10 This went on for the next two years, so that people throughout the province of Asia—both Jews and Greeks—heard the word of the Lord.
11 God gave Paul the power to perform unusual miracles. 12 When handkerchiefs or aprons that had merely touched his skin were placed on sick people, they were healed of their diseases, and evil spirits were expelled.“
Points
- Paul spent approximately two – three years in Ephesus, speaking the Word of God.
- His mission in Ephesus and throughout the province of Asia was greater than he had expected. Paul continued to share the Good News.
- While others turned away, there were still believers who remained faithful.
- Paul took them and the word of the Lord. The Good News was spread throughout the region. The church of Ephesus was established, and because of those things we are able to learn from and read the book of Ephesians (my favorite chapter is 6).
Reflection
Sisters and brothers, we have read the many accounts of opposition that Paul and the disciples faced, but they did not give up on sharing the Way to God through Jesus Christ. Let us be as committed as Paul was to share the Good News, to live a life that reflects God’s workmanship within us, and allow the Holy Spirit to lead us.
Remember, the Good News of Jesus Christ will spread with or without us, but God is inviting/calling us to become active participants in sharing the truth of the Good News with others. Do not be afraid, the Lord will equip you with everything you need.
Start by making your home your first mission field. Be an example of Christ in your home and with your family, and continue to share the Good News wherever the Lord sends you.
Prayer
Father God, we thank you for everything you have done for us. Thank you for saving us. Lord, we don’t want to keep what you are doing to ourselves. We want to be used by you. Use our lives and the lives of our family members to be an example of Christ wherever we go. Lord, start your mighty work inside of us. Remove any opposition that is within us that keeps us from pursuing what you have called us to pursue. Remove temptations that arise within us or against us that try to take Your place. Lord, you know our hearts and our thoughts – make them clean, fill them with you, and align them to your will. Lord, we pray for our family members and give them to you. Lord, as you continue to work in us, continue to work in our children, spouses, ex-spouses, parents, grandparents, in-laws, cousins, aunts and uncles. Lord, begin working and spreading throughout our families forever breaking generations of disfunction, addiction and abuse. Lord, change hearts and restore relationships in a healthy way. Lord, we want to be so filled with you that it overflows from generation to generations. Lord, be with those who have no family and bless them with a beautiful godly family of friends and believers. Lord, we pray for those preparing for surgery, those going through Chemo, those who are make end of life decisions today, and ask that you comfort them and pour out your perfect peace. Lord, wipe their tears, remove the anxiety, show them your love, and help them to feel Your presence and know they are not alone. Lord, bless the jobless with gainful employment that will sustain them financially. In Jesus name, amen.
