United in Prayer

Happy Wednesday! This week we read, Jesus gave the apostles/disciples instructions not to leave Jerusalem until they receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Today, we continue our reading with the apostles in Jerusalem. Join me as we continue reading in Acts.

12 Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, a distance of half a mile. 13 When they arrived, they went to the upstairs room of the house where they were staying.

Here are the names of those who were present: Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James (son of Alphaeus), Simon (the zealot), and Judas (son of James). 14 They all met together and were constantly united in prayer, along with Mary the mother of Jesus, several other women, and the brothers of Jesus.” – Acts 1:12-14 NLT

Here we read, the apostles followed through with the instructions Jesus gave them “Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift he promised, as I told you before. (Acts 1:4)”

There are two things I want to point out:

  • The word constantly.
  • Who was in the room.

While they waited on the promise, the apostles remained in prayer. They didn’t just meet and pray once, but the word used here was constantly. They were constantly united in prayer.

In addition to the apostles, there were others united with them in prayer.

  • Mary – mother of Jesus
  • Several other women
  • The brothers of Jesus

There they were broken by the loss of the physical presence of Jesus, but strengthened in prayer with each other waiting on the promise.

Sisters and brothers, whatever you are going through, whatever the journey – God’s promises are true and they will be fulfilled. Maybe the time He has you waiting is the time He desires for you to keep on praying. If you have someone you can ask to pray for you, ask them to join you in prayer, but if possible get on the phone and start praying together. Allow the words and the outcries of your heart to fill heaven.

Things to walk away with:

  • Continue to Listen to the Instructions from the Lord.
  • While You Wait – Keep Praying!
  • Unite in prayer with someone else.

Father God, thank you for your Word that instructs us. Thank you for the promise of the Holy Spirit who leads us. Thank you for the ability to go directly to you in prayer. Father, you are so good to us. Even in times when we don’t see things working out for our good, you open our eyes to see so much more. Lord, only you can do that. Lord, today we ask that you go before us at work – cover the essential workers with a covering of your protection. Lord, be with those who are telecommuting and help them in the midst of office drama/politics. Lord, be with those who have been laid-off or furloughed and provide for them financially. Lord, give patience to those who are home with their children, spouses and other family members. Stand with them and bring peace in their homes. Finally, Lord we desire to do what you have called us to do as followers of Christ. Lord, keep our ears attuned to your instructions and give us an obedient heart to follow through. Lord, hear our prayers and heal our land. In the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.
