Temptation of Power and Glory

Happy Monday! May God be with you today. May you feel His presence wherever you go. Enjoy today’s devotion.

“8 Next the devil took him to the peak of a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. “I will give it all to you,” he said, “if you will kneel down and worship me.”

10 “Get out of here, Satan,” Jesus told him.“For the Scriptures say,

‘You must worship the Lord your God
    and serve only him.’[Deuteronomy 6:13]

11 Then the devil went away, and angels came and took care of Jesus.” – Matthew 4:8-11 NLT

Again the devil tried to allure Jesus by offering him the kingdoms of this world. The devil was using a similar strategy that he used with Eve in the garden, “you will be like God” (Genesis 3:5), by saying, “you will have all the world’s kingdom” (Matthew 4:8-9).

Jesus was not convinced, nor was he going to allow the devil to take up anymore of His time. Jesus quoted scripture and told Satan to “get out of here”.

When I struggle with the successes of this world, I often pray for the Lord to keep me focused on his plan for my life. The scripture that has kept me grounded throughout my career is Mark 8:36 “And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul?”

What are you struggling with today? ______

What is the devil trying to get you to hold on to? _______

Ask the Lord to strengthen your faith and to give you power to break free from temptation (e.g., financial, sexual, etc.)

Father God, thank you for today. Thank you for waking us up and for giving us another opportunity to serve you. Lord, you know everything about us. You continue to show us your faithfulness. Lord, as we go throughout the day help us to recognize the devil’s schemes to separate and divide, to tear apart churches and communities, and destroy the family with lies and pain. Lord, all power and glory belongs to you. Work in us to bring glory to your name. Lord, teach us your word and let it be written on our hearts so that we will be able to stand against the darkness of this world. Lord, keep us aligned to your word and will for our lives. Lord, don’t let us be distracted by the temporary riches of this world. Change our hearts to prepare this generation and the next for your return. Lord, your will be done. In Jesus name, amen.

Keep seeking! Keep trusting! Keep praying!
