Happy Friday! When I travel through airports I am intrigued by the various people, places and things around me. An airport is like a mini city with people headed to various destinations. However, before I am able to check my luggage I must show proper identification. After I proceed through TSA, there is another check to verify that I belong on the airplane that I plan to board. Right before I walk to the airplane, I scan my boarding pass and wait for the signal to proceed to board the airplane. All of those checks help to identify who I am and where I am going. While the airport security and staff may not know me, they trusted my identification to tell them who I truly was – Mrs. White please proceed. Today, in 1 Peter chapter 2 we will cover identity. Enjoy today’s reading.
Bible verse – 1 Peter 2:7-10 NLT
“7 Yes, you who trust him recognize the honor God has given him. But for those who reject him, “The stone that the builders rejected has now become the cornerstone.”[Psalm 118:22]
8 And, “He is the stone that makes people stumble, the rock that makes them fall.”[Isaiah 8:14 ] They stumble because they do not obey God’s word, and so they meet the fate that was planned for them.
9 But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.
10 “Once you had no identity as a people; now you are God’s people. Once you received no mercy; now you have received God’s mercy.”[Hosea 1:6; 9; 2:23 ]“
Reflection
Peter explained that there were and are people who have rejected Jesus as Lord and Savior of their lives. Verse 8 states, “they stumble because they do not obey God’s word.”
Sisters and brothers, do you stumble for the same reason (e.g., failure to obey God’s word)?
The reassurance and hope Peter provides in verses 9-10 should encourage us all about who we are in Christ.
Our identity – we are God’s people.
As we continue to be obedient to the word, we understand the depth of forgiveness that we were given, the grace we have been given through Christ Jesus, and where our hope comes from. We trust our lives into the hands of a merciful God who loves us and who chose us.
Sisters and brothers, this weekend and throughout the year don’t forget who you are:
- You are God’s chosen.
- A royal priest.
- A holy nation.
- God’s very own possession.
Take Away
People may not know you, but your identity in Christ Jesus defines you and tells others who and whose you are. Get rid of your expired passport (old self) that is useless for moving around in Christ – you are a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17). Go be the light in this dark world. Stand firm in Christ our rock and foundation (cornerstone).
Prayer
Father God, thank you for your grace and mercy. Thank you for being a light in the darkest moments in our lives. Lord, thank you for choosing us to be yours. Lord, be with families who have lost loved ones. Lord, they need your strength. Lord, as the cornerstone helps us to remember to place all our worries and pain on you – you can handle it better than we can.Lord, reignite passion within us for you, for those who are weary restore their souls with rest and renew our minds to focus on you. Strengthen our faith to walk in the fullness of you. Be our hope on which we stand. Cover us and give us favor today. Direct our steps in a way that brings glory to your name. In Jesus name, amen
