Good morning! As a child and as an adult I love playing cards and dominoes. It gives me joy just to play, but I am over the moon when I win. The strategy it takes to win, the observation of others while we play, and the conversations during the game are exhilarating. There is a competitive joy that engages me and it is hard to play when I know there isn’t a chance of me winning. Today, in our reading we will read about how we win in this world. Enjoy today’s devotion and prayer.
Bible Verse – 1 John 5:1-5 NLT
“1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has become a child of God. And everyone who loves the Father loves his children, too. 2 We know we love God’s children if we love God and obey his commandments. 3 Loving God means keeping his commandments, and his commandments are not burdensome. 4 For every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith. 5 And who can win this battle against the world? Only those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God.”
Reflection
I love the question asked in verse 5 – “who can win this battle against the world?”
- Only those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God
- Every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith
Sisters and brothers, there is so much packed into these verses, but verse five (5) struck me differently than it did five (5) years ago. If you are a child of God who is struggling with the things of this world, remember this world is defeated and there is victory through our faith.
The strategy we use to win every day is our faith and being fully dressed in the armor of God. As we observe everything around us…let’s focus on what it takes to win and defeat this world – our faith. Hold onto our faith!
Prayer
Father God, as your children, we thank you for the life that you have given us. We thank you for your son Jesus who made a way for us to be called Your children. Lord, you are all knowing and forever present with us. Thank you for equipping us with Your Holy Spirit and for living within us. Thank you for the hope that we have because of you and your promises.
Lord, as we celebrate the season of hope – the birth of Jesus allow us to always remember why we celebrate this season. Lord, as many struggle emotionally, spiritually, mentally and financially through this season – help us to continue to keep our eyes on you and for us to remember the victory we have over this world because of our faith.
Lord, help us to be an example of your love here on earth. Help us to encourage others who are having a difficult time right now. Help us to be a blessing and not a hindrance to others because of our opinions on matters. Director our actions and the words that we convey to others. Guide us through times of grief and missing loved ones, and help us to comfort those who are grieving. Open doors and opportunities for those seeking employment and those who are looking for new employment options. Lord, may the new places of employment have a dynamic culture of care and well-being for their staff.
Lord, stabilize finances for companies that are struggling to exist. Help them to be able to continue to pay for salaries and development. Lord, be with each person who is trying to meet their financial needs. Lord, you know if they need help paying their monthly housing, utilities, food and water – be their provider and help them financially and give them discipline to manage the overflow of their blessings.
Lord, help those with other matters not mentioned in this prayer today. Lord, you know what is on their heart and the battle they struggle with mentally. Lord, give them peace of mind. Let your Holy Spirit speak louder than the lies of Satan and this world. Lord, allow your peace to overflow in every area of our lives. Keep working in and through us. Help us to hold onto our faith no matter what lies ahead. In Jesus name, amen.
