The Plea

Good morning! Today we will continue our reading in Matthew 20. The backdrop begins with Jesus moving through another crowd. Enjoy today’s reading and your day.

BIBLE VERSE – Matthew 20:29-34 NLT
“29 As Jesus and the disciples left the town of Jericho, a large crowd followed behind. 30 Two blind men were sitting beside the road. When they heard that Jesus was coming that way, they began shouting, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!”

31 “Be quiet!” the crowd yelled at them. But they only shouted louder, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!”

32 When Jesus heard them, he stopped and called, “What do you want me to do for you?” 33 “Lord,” they said, “we want to see!” 34 Jesus felt sorry for them and touched their eyes. Instantly they could see! Then they followed him.”

REFLECTION
Have you noticed, we (or at least I) never realize how much we/I take our/my body for granted until something begins to hurt or no longer functions the way it was designed to work. In the case of these men in the verses above, we don’t know why they are blind, we don’t know what life has been like for them. What we do read is that the crowd was trying to control their plea to the Lord to have mercy on them.

See the blind men heard Jesus was coming. They positioned themselves in a way that even without sight, Jesus would be able to hear them, they knew something about Jesus’ ability to offer mercy and healing. The blindmen called, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us!” While the crowd tried to control their plea, the blind men would not relent from calling on the Lord.

Brothers and sisters, sometimes we need to be louder than the crowd and chaos around us, and cry out to the Lord.

  • What do you need to cry out to the Lord for in your life? _____
  • If Jesus asked you, “What do you want me to do for you?” What would your response be? _______

But the best part in the verses was verse 34, “Jesus felt sorry for them and touched their eyes. Instantly they could see! Then they followed him.”

When the Lord helps you, I hope that you can truly see Him, see how good God is, how merciful and loving God is, and follow Him as they did.

PRAYER
Father God, thank you for being so gracious and merciful. Lord, we can always count on you to come through for us. Lord, forgive us of arrogance, doubt and disobedience. Lord, help us to see you in all the areas in our lives. Lord, don’t let us be like the crowd, shutting down the voices of people in need. Lord, let us humbly help your children/sheep and lead them to you. Lord, we lift up those who are ill today and are in need of your mercy and healing. Lord, touch them and heal them. Lord, bring comfort to their bodies and their family members. Lord, touch those who are blind and protect them as they rely on others for sight, but Lord, first, be their eyes and help them to see you at work in their lives. Lord, touch the spiritually blind and open their eyes to see you. Lord, wake them up from their slumber so that they will begin to follow you. Lord, change us. Continue to work in us. Teach us how to apply your Words into our daily lives. Lord, we don’t want to be blind to the things that you are doing, we don’t want to miss one thing. Open our eyes so that we can see you. In Jesus name, amen.
