They Refused to Listen

Happy 1st Friday of the New Year! This week we had the pleasure of reading about Jesus and John the Baptist. The highlights – John the Baptist “repent and be baptized” and Jesus’ confirmation to John the Baptist “the blind see, the lame walk, this with leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised to life and the Good News is being preached to the poor.” Awe…it was such a refreshing read. We will end the week with Jesus’ message to non believers. Enjoy today’s devotion and your weekend!

BIBLE VERSE – Matthew 11:20-24 NLT

20 Then Jesus began to denounce the towns where he had done so many of his miracles, because they hadn’t repented of their sins and turned to God. 21 “What sorrow awaits you, Korazin and Bethsaida! For if the miracles I did in you had been done in wicked Tyre and Sidon, their people would have repented of their sins long ago, clothing themselves in burlap and throwing ashes on their heads to show their remorse. 22 I tell you, Tyre and Sidon will be better off on judgment day than you.

23 “And you people of Capernaum, will you be honored in heaven? No, you will go down to the place of the dead.[g] For if the miracles I did for you had been done in wicked Sodom, it would still be here today. 24 I tell you, even Sodom will be better off on judgment day than you.”

REFLECTION

Today, we can read this and say they were spiritually blind or hard-hearted and as a result they refused to believe the Good News. They refused to repent even after seeing miracle  after miracle being performed.

Just a thought, do you think our own cities would be listed as being better off or worse?_________

Unfortunately, we still live in times where people hear the word, but it falls on ‘death ears’. We live in the days of miraculous healings and unexplainable phenomena, and yet people don’t believe or repent and accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

What changed your heart or what did it take for you to accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior? _________

Let us continue to pray for our spouses, children, family, friends and neighbors who have turned away from the Lord or don’t believe or don’t know Him.

Who will you pray for? ___________

PRAYER

Father God we thank you for sending your son Jesus Christ to save us. Thank you for the Good News. Thank you for forgiveness of sins. Father without your grace, love, forgiveness and mercy we would be destined to hell. Lord, thank you for loving us enough to send your Son. Lord, we certainly don’t deserve it, but we are so grateful you did. Lord, we pray for marriages, children, families, friends and neighbors who are struggling with their faith and trust in you. Lord, you can open the eyes of the blind and awaken the dead, will you open their eyes and awaken them spiritually to see and hear from you. Lord, will you soften our hearts to be consistently in prayer for the lost so that they may be found. Lord, equip us as we go out and share the Good News. Lord, touch our tongues so that your words will overflow from them. Lord, touch our feet and lead us where you want us to go. Lord, armor us up and protect us from the darts of the enemy. Lord, give us peace as we continue to live for you and serve you. Change us, Lord. In Jesus name, we pray amen.
