Gift of Prophesy

Happy Wednesday! Today is another day that God has given us to share/use the spiritual gifts that He has given us. Have you discovered one of your gifts? Well today we are covering spiritual gift number six of nine that Paul wrote the Corinthian church about so many years ago. Join me as we re-read 1 Corinthians chapter 12, verses 7-11, with a focus on verse 10b.

A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other. To one person the Spirit gives the ability to give wise advice[b]; to another the same Spirit gives a message of special knowledge.[c] The same Spirit gives great faith to another, and to someone else the one Spirit gives the gift of healing. 10 He gives one person the power to perform miracles, and another the ability to prophesy. He gives someone else the ability to discern whether a message is from the Spirit of God or from another spirit. Still another person is given the ability to speak in unknown languages,[d] while another is given the ability to interpret what is being said. 11 It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have.” 1 Corinthians 12:7-11 NLT

The spiritual gifts assessment describes the gift of prophesy as, “the divine strength or ability to boldly speak and bring clarity to scriptural and doctrinal truth, in some cases foretelling God’s plan. It is also speaking out Biblical truth that reveals the mind and counsel of God that cannot be known through natural means. This word brings strength, encouragement and comfort to those who hear it. Acts 2:37-40; Acts 7:51-53; Acts 26:24-29; 1 Corinthians 14:1-4; and 1 Thessalonians 1:5”

The gift of prophesy is truly a gift from God, because it declares a message of God for His people. In the Old Testament you will find minor and major prophets. Each prophet had a message from God to the people or to Kings. However, there were times when kings had false prophets within their midst and those false prophets told the kings what they wanted to hear. My favorite story in the Bible about a king and prophets was in 2 Chronicles chapter 18. If you happen to read the chapter begin at least a chapter or two before, but if you want the intense short version read chapter 18. This is a prime example that you need to consult with God and discern what a prophet prophecies over you. Not all good or bad news is from God. Sisters and brothers, test the spirit and trust God.

Father God, thank you for this day. Lord, we don’t know what today will bring but you already know. Lord, you have been so gracious and merciful to us. Lord, you have given us the things we need and in many cases the desires of our hearts. Lord, there is no one like you in all the earth. Lord, forgive us for the times when we put others (people, things) before you. Lord, forgive us when we only want to hear the things that we like to hear and ignore the truth or the things you have said. Lord, keep us humble in spirit, aware and obedient to your truth. Lord, we want to receive direct words from you. We want to use your message to strengthen, encourage and comfort others. However, Lord we want to be obedient and speak the truth even when it isn’t pleasant (we don’t want to lie about your truth/message). Lord, we desire to follow you and live our lives for you. Lord, we ask that you equip us and prepare us for the gifts that you have instilled into us. Lord, when we are fearful of using gifts calm our hearts and clear the voices from our heads so that we can hear from you and use the gift(s) you have given us for your glory. Lord, you are God, creator of all things. You are more powerful than our current circumstances and fears. Lord, breathe your Holy Spirit on us and awaken our dry bones. Lord, make us spiritually alive and aware of your presence here on earth. Lord, go before us and lead us in the way we should go, to say the things you desire for us to say, and love as you have called us to love. In Jesus name, amen.
