Gift of Healing

Happy Monday! Last week we read on several spiritual gifts that are given to us by God. In 1 Corinthians chapter 12 verses 7-11 NLT, Paul discussed nine spiritual gifts. Today we will cover the spiritual gift of healing. Join me as we re-read verses 7-11 and briefly explain the gift.

A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other. To one person the Spirit gives the ability to give wise advice[b]; to another the same Spirit gives a message of special knowledge.[c] The same Spirit gives great faith to another, and to someone else the one Spirit gives the gift of healing10 He gives one person the power to perform miracles, and another the ability to prophesy. He gives someone else the ability to discern whether a message is from the Spirit of God or from another spirit. Still another person is given the ability to speak in unknown languages,[d] while another is given the ability to interpret what is being said. 11 It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have.”

The Bible has given us several examples of the gift of healing. The gift of healing occurred through touch, laying of hands, faith and prayer. We read examples of the prophet Elisha praying to God, laying himself over a child and the child came back to life (2 Kings 4:25-35). We read about a woman who touched the hem of Jesus’ garment and was healed (Matthew 9:18-26). We read about someone’s faith making them well (Mark 5:34, 10:52). In Isaiah chapter 38:1-7, 15 years were added to Hezekiah’s life. Sisters and brothers, the gift of healing has the ability to restore health and temporarily hold off death as in the case of Isaiah and many people who have been healed from illnesses and injuries.

According to the spiritual gifts assessment the gift of healing is “the divine strength or ability to act as an intermediary in faith, prayer and by the laying of hands for healing of physical and mental illnesses. Acts 3:1-10, Acts 9:32-35, Acts 28:7-10, 1 Corinthians 12:9 and 12:28.

Sisters and brothers, I’ve seen the Lord’s healing power. I’ve experienced the joy of answered prayers for healing. I’ve seen the divine strength and ability of powerful prayer warriors at work and people were healed. However, I also know where that strength and power comes from and that is from the Lord. No one can heal without the spirit of God “the one and only spirit” who gives the spiritual gift. It is God who decides who will be healed, for how long and why or why not. Since we aren’t God we must continue to seek his face in prayer, no matter the circumstances and trust His will to heal us (whom ever) here on earth or in heaven. Don’t lose hope, there are thousands of walking miracles in the world today. Have faith, the Lord has given many people the gift of healing and that could be you.

Sisters and brothers, do you believe? Then, pray for the sick.

Father God, thank you for today. Thank you for your love, mercy and grace over our lives. Lord, you can make a way out of no way. Lord, today we are asking you to help us with any unbelief that we have regarding the gift of healing. Lord, we pray for those who sought you in prayer to heal them or someone else and you made the decision not to heal them or that person here on earth. Lord, they are still hurting from the loss of life or lack of healing. Lord, speak to their pain and heal their heartache. Lord, give them the mindset of forgiveness and courage to trust you even when they can’t understand the reason for their loss or continued illness. Father, we pray today for your healing touch on the people who are suffering from cancer. Lord, from infants to aging adults we ask for comfort in their bodies, comfort for their families and for peace during the treatments and recovery. Lord, we pray for your mighty hand to touch other people who are ill and suffering and ask for healing in their bodies. Lord, we know that you are more than able. Lord, have your way. Pour out your spiritual gift of healing onto us so that we will stand in prayer, seek your wisdom and knowledge to lay hands on or pray for the sick to be healed. In Jesus name, amen.

Keep praying! Keep Trusting! Keep believing!
