The Gift of Knowledge

Happy Wednesday! Yesterday, we talked about the spiritual gift of wisdom. Today we will continue our reading in 1 Corinthians chapter 12 and we will focus on spiritual gift number two of nine that Paul mentions in this chapter. The spiritual gift that we will cover is the gift of special knowledge. Join me as we learn more about that gift.

A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other. To one person the Spirit gives the ability to give wise advice[b]; to another the same Spirit gives a message of special knowledge.[c] The same Spirit gives great faith to another, and to someone else the one Spirit gives the gift of healing. 10 He gives one person the power to perform miracles, and another the ability to prophesy. He gives someone else the ability to discern whether a message is from the Spirit of God or from another spirit. Still another person is given the ability to speak in unknown languages,[d] while another is given the ability to interpret what is being said. 11 It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have.” – 1 Corinthians 12:7-11 NLT

Where the spiritual gift of wisdom gives insight into teaching Biblical truth, the spiritual gift of the word of knowledge focuses on the ability to apply Biblical truth to life. So not only would we desire to gain an accurate and deep intuitive understanding of Biblical truth, but we also want to be able to apply Biblical teaching/truth to our lives.

The spiritual gifts assessment provides a brief explanation for the gift of the word of knowledge, “The gift of knowledge is the divine strength or ability to bring clarity and to understand situations and circumstances often accompanied by a word from God. Luke 5:22, 11:17; John 4:17-18; Acts 5:1-11; 1 Cor. 12:8; Col. 2:3.

The Bible is filled with situations and circumstances where prophets, regular people, chosen people and the least of these were given the ability to bring clarity and understand situations because they heard from God and acted in obedience to His word. Sisters and brothers, God desires to give you the gift of knowledge. God wants to help you understand life from His perspective which is above anything we can see, hear or imagine from our own limited perspective.

  • What situation or circumstance are you facing today?
  • Will you allow God to fill you with His gift of knowledge to help you address the situation or circumstance?
  • Will you be obedient and apply His word/guidance to the situation or to your life?

Father God, thank you for another day and opportunity to draw closer to you. Lord, thank you for never giving up on us, even when there may have been times when we have given up on you. Lord, we don’t want to be complacent. Lord, we are tired of just going through the motions and living a double life. Lord, we want to be all in for you, but Lord there is a power struggle between our flesh (what we want to do and what we don’t want to do) and sometimes our flesh wins, which is a loss. Lord, we don’t want to lose anymore. Lord, we want to be all in and focused on your vision and purpose for our lives. We don’t want to walk in defeat, but in victory over the enemy and our flesh. Lord, in addition to wisdom, will you pour out the spiritual gift of knowledge on us. Lord, we want to unwrap that gift and use it for your glory. Lord, breathe that gift into us now and teach us to use it to its full potential. Lord, give us an obedient heart, keep working in us and change us. In Jesus name, amen.
