Happy Friday! This week has been filled with God’s powerful word and His faithful reminders of who we are in Christ. I can read and re-read these chapters and new things will stand out and connect with other points. God is doing something new. Join me as we continue reading 1 Peter chapter 2.
4 You are coming to Christ, who is the living cornerstone of God’s temple. He was rejected by people, but he was chosen by God for great honor.
5 And you are living stones that God is building into his spiritual temple. What’s more, you are his holy priests. Through the mediation of Jesus Christ, you offer spiritual sacrifices that please God. 6 As the Scriptures say,
“I am placing a cornerstone in Jerusalem,
chosen for great honor,
and anyone who trusts in him
will never be disgraced.”[Isaiah 28:16]
In prior verses we read:
- 1 Peter 1:2-4, Jesus is our living hope;
- 1 Peter 1:23, Jesus is the living word; and now
- 1 Peter 2:4, Jesus is the cornerstone.
In these verses, Peter is reminding us on our journey of spiritual growth, that we continue to come to Christ. That our relationship with Christ move beyond where we are today to something more intimate and personal. He also reminds us that while Christ was rejected by people, God chose him and in 1 Peter 1, we read God the Father knew us and chose us long ago, and his Spirit has made us holy, because we have obeyed him and have been cleansed by the blood of Jesus Christ.
Because of what Christ Jesus did for us, we are like the living stone. We are being built spiritually and through that spiritual maturity, and because of what Christ did for us, we can go directly to the Father with our prayers, our time alone, our need for encouragement and reassurance.
Sisters and brothers, you have been given an opportunity to live a new life in Christ. So don’t be dismayed or discouraged when others reject you because of your belief. Jesus is our living hope, the living word and the chief cornerstone. Let us put our hope and trust in Him and continue to press forward in our spiritual walk – a walk that is pleasing to God.
Stay encouraged! Jesus has you!
Father God, thank you for renewed life in you. Lord, thank you for being faithful to God’s plan, even when the people – even during times we have rejected you. Lord, you know us intimately and understand how much we desire to be pleasing to you. Lord, as you build us up spiritual may our lives be pleasing to you. Lord, forgive us of our sins (known and unknown) and make us whole in you. Lord, remove temptations from our hearts and minds that do not please you or bring you glory. Lord, equip us in your word and help us to lean on you daily. Empower us with your Holy Spirit to boldly share the gospel with others who are in the world. In Jesus name, amen!
