The Commission

Good morning! Have you ever been in a situation that caused you to rethink your entire life? Maybe you had plans or ideas, but for some reason those plans did not work out as you planned? As we have been reading, we know the disciples thought they knew the plan, but they became distracted when it didn’t go according to the way they thought it should have transpired. Join me today as we finish Matthew 28. Have a wonderful day and weekend, and we will pickup on Monday in a new book in the Bible.

“16 Then the eleven disciples left for Galilee, going to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped him—but some of them doubted!

18 Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth.19 Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations,[b] baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 20 Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”” – Matthew 28:16-20 NRSV

While the book of John chapter 20 verses 19-29, provides more details about Jesus appearing to the disciples, we know Jesus did appear to them and eventually cleared their doubt.

Jesus informed them of his authority in heaven and on earth, but he gave them a command and that same command was given to us when we accepted Jesus as our Lord and Savior. The command or commission is to go and make disciples of all nations (all people, not just the Jews), baptizing them in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit (the trinity).

Sisters and brothers, may be things in your life are not going as you have planned, but don’t lose focus. We have been instructed to teach others the word of God and to be obedient to it. Let us start today with a refreshed and renewed mind, one that is focused on God’s call on our lives. Begin with you and your household (your first mission), and let it spread throughout every area of your life (e.g., work, school, church, community). Trust Jesus to be with you always and until the end of the ages.

Father God, thank you for giving your son Jesus all authority in heaven and on earth. Thank you for the commission and a boldness to share the gospel truth to all nations. Lord, thank you for never giving up on us. Lord, as we learn more about your word, help us to apply it to our lives so that we may be living examples of Christ in us. Lord, continue to work in our lives and strengthen our minds to remain focused on the big picture. Lord, while we are in this world we have a tendency to worry about many things, but Lord help us to release those things to you. Lord, let your Holy Spirit power over shadow and uproot the worry in our hearts and minds. Speak life into us and free us from fear. In Jesus name, amen.

Keep seeking! Keep trusting! Keep praying!
