Happy Monday! “You who are slaves must submit to your masters with all respect. Do what they tell you—not only if they are kind and reasonable, but even if they are cruel. For God is pleased when, conscious of his will, you patiently endure unjust treatment.” 1 Peter 2:18-19NLT
In my early twenties and over the course of developing into a Christian (still a work in progress), I had a difficult time with this verse (to be honest a couple others) and the idea of submitting to cruel behavior. In growing in the word, I learned my submission to Christ is greater than submission to others, because if I live to honor the Lord, I will follow his example – prayerfully, patiently and actively seeking his will and guidance in all circumstances. I know without a doubt and can testify that the Lord who fights for us, is the same Lord who delivers us from cruel and unjust situations.
In the workplace as you work under the authority of someone don’t forget to pray for them. Pray the Lord begins to work in their lives, in their leadership abilities and in their treatment of others. Stand in the gap for others who also struggle with their managers/leaders and together pray for change, but also in your actions be a light in the dark situation until the Lord changes the situation or moves you from underneath their authority. If you have a voice to influence improvement of conditions, ask the Lord to give you discernment and favor to bring about change wherever you serve under someone’s authority.
Continue to be an example of Christ like behavior. Keep seeking! Keep praying! Keep trusting!
